After getting the big hole started we drill two small holes.

The needle-nose pliers are handy for cleaning the burrs from the edge of the hole.

A much larger hole saw (3.5 inch) is used to cut into the five-gallon buckets.  3.5 inches is about perfect for a 3.0 inch elbow.
